Day Trips from Hue

Floating downstream from Hue, dragon fruit orchards slide past and morning mist smells of river weed. The boat drops you at three royal tombs, each a universe of stone elephants, cracked mosaics, pine-scented silence.

A crescent of sand curls between green headlands, oyster farms float like bamboo chess pieces on the lagoon. The sea tastes of salt and petrol from returning fishing boats. Lunch is charcoal-grilled slipper lobster at a shack with plastic stools.
